"More than Merely Tough: Show of '60s and '70s Detroit artists reveals a complex mix of precision, rawness"

The Cass Corridor movement, the remarkable artistic flowering that sprouted around Wayne State University in the 1960s and '70s is examined in the exhibition Subverting Modernism: Cass Corridor Revisited 1966-1980, made up of works from the Wayne State University Art Collection and opening March 20 at the University Gallery of Eastern Michigan University. The show is curated by Prof. Julia R. Myers and the opening reception includes a 6:30pm lecture by art critic Vince Carducci titled "Envisioning Real Utopias in Detroit." On March 27, EMU's Halle Library Auditorium screens the documentary Images from Detroit's Cass Corridor, with rare footage from the '60s and '70s.

"Other Art Around Town" - Noted in a side bar is that Wayne State's Elaine L. Jacob Gallery hosts its 2013 MFA Thesis Exhibition through April 5.

Subverting Modernism: Cass Corridor Revisited 1966-1980 exhibit runs from March 11 through April 28 at EMU's University Gallery, 2013 900 Oakwood St, Ypsilanti. An opening reception at University Gallery will take place on March 20 from 4 to 7 p.m. A special lecture, "Envisioning Real Utopias in Detroit," will be conducted by Vince Carducci at the EMU Student Center, room 310 A, at 6:30 p.m. A film screening of "Images" from Detroit's Cass Corridor, by Kathryn Brackett Luchs and Shaun Bangert, will be held at the Halle Library Auditorium on March 27 at 5:30 p.m.

Exhibition at CMU gallery shows history of Detroit's famous Cass Corridor artists

Subverting Modernism: Cass Corridor Revisited 1966-1980 will be presented at University Art Gallery at Central Michigan University starting today. The exhibition runs through Feb. 9. Subverting Modernism is a multi-year collaboration between Eastern Michigan University, the Wayne State University Art Collection, which is lending most of the works in the exhibition, and Central Michigan University, where the show will open.
