Interior

Born in Logan, Ohio but raised in Detroit, Michigan, Della Garretson and her twin sister Lillie were always interested in learning the art of painting. In pursuit of this knowledge, Della rented her own studio in New York City, and was rewarded for her artistic oeuvre with the National Academy of Design's Silver Medal award. The twins left the United States for Belgium and France, seeking the inspiration and influence of the contemporary center of the art world. In 1902, Garretson's work was shown at the Paris Salon, and she received a Bronze Medal from the exhibition.

This oil on canvas work entitled Interior was painted by Della Garretson in 1927. The influence of her travels abroad to France and Belgium is apparent within the visible brushstrokes and creative color use within the painting. Her color scheme of cornflower blue and raw sienna creates a cozy, warm atmosphere of a typical genre scene.
