Lynne Avadenka,The Distance Between Monuments IV. 2006. Pencil, graphite, gouache, collage on paper.

The Distance Between Monuments IV by Lynne Avadenka utilizes the collage technique to piece together text, maps, and drawings to lay out where monuments are in Germany. The piece brings together the concept of the physical world and language as a form of communication. The merging of language and design is something that Avadenka explores frequently in her work, as well as physical impact . Her artistry in multimedia is influenced by the Jewish experience.

Lynne Avadenka has been active in the Detroit arts community since attending Wayne State University to receive her MFA in 1981. She uses printmaking to produce works of art on paper, but also for book arts as well. Avadenka has taught at Wayne State University,  College of Creative Studies, Penland School of Crafts, Center for Book Arts in New York, and Dartmouth. Her experience in printmaking has also led her to the role of Artistic Director at Signal Return, a community letterpress print shop in Detroit’s Eastern Market. Avadenka has been a recipient of individual artist grants from the National Endowment of the Arts and The Michigan Council of Arts and Cultural Affairs and has also received a Kresge Fellowship in 2009. Her work has been exhibited in many collections in places like the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Library of Congress, the British Library, the Israel Museum, and the New York Public Library.

This piece was a bequest of James Pearson Duffy and was received in 2015.
