Winter - McGregor Memorial Court

February 20, 2011

Added last year to the National Register of Historic Places, the McGregor Memorial Conference Center is one of the architectural highlights of Wayne State?s campus. One of Minoru Yamasaki?s landmark buildings in Detroit, the design features sleek lines combined with pointed arches inspired by Gothic architecture, an exemplary feature of many of his buildings. Focusing attention on the sculpture garden which lies between the McGregor building and Wayne State?s Art building, this James Weeks painting depicts a familiar Winter afternoon on campus. Weeks hailed from the Bay Area Figurative Art school of painters. He is known for his flattened style and deft attention to line and aggressive use of bold, colorful shapes as seen here in this snowy landscape.
